The Tale. In Every Way.

Product Description

Have you ever wondered what makes a story real? What is the trick that makes a voice, the setting of a scene or an imaginary place so profound that we say, “it really feels like being there”?
This course is about learning how to refine the five senses. Better yet, students will learn how to use them to write and to write about them. Because imagining and telling stories do not only have to do with the sense of sight but also with hearing, smell, taste and touch.
This course will focus on short stories. Because if a short story is “the shimmering water in a glass, the fleeting within the permanent”, as Cortázar used to say, well then choosing real images that capture that shimmering and fix it there, on the page, becomes crucial. Students will mostly write and read a lot, while being guided by those who have managed to turn feelings into words before them. Consider Proust and his madeleine moment or Süskind and his perfumes. Good storytellers always try to draw their own sensory maps and during this course, students will learn about how some like a specific one better and use it to convey a particular feeling. They will discover counterpoint and climax and see how observation and sensory conveying can sometimes go as far as obsession. Because writing is chasing an obsession above all, or better yet putting an obsession down on paper. That is also what the course will be about.
Class after class students will be working on their stories and watching them develop. They will “look after” them through editing, rewriting and working on the subject and images. In a way, they will learn to develop a sixth sense, which is intuition, the ability to perceive what others cannot. In other words, the power to recognize and create stories.

Lessons will start in November and will go on for three months.

How does Classi-fy work?
You’ll have to follow a weekly timetable of appointments, which can be video lessons or notes to read. You’ll have deadlines to write and share your homework on Classi-fy website. You’ll read what your classmates write and you’ll be able to comment or receive feedback on what you write. You’ll be able to meet each other and talk about the lessons on the forum – ok, we already know you won’t only talk about that, but that’s part of the fun. Sometimes your teacher will post a video in which he publicly analyses the work of the class, but you’ll receive your personal evaluation also from your classmates, during the debate.

What about the course timetable?
You’ll know it pretty soon: lessons will start in October and will last three months.

What are the technical skill necessary to take part to the course? Do I have to install a special program on my computer?
You’ll mainly work online, therefore all you need is the internet connection. On website you can share your documents, watch the video lessons, download teaching material and text your classmates.

What does it happen at the end of the course?
The class will come to Scuola Holden, in Turin, in order to attend the final lesson and collect your diploma. Eventually you’ll meet everyone and, if everything is right, you’ll have a beer together in Borgo Dora to celebrate.
